About the Sun Village

The Sun Village is a non-governmental charity orphanage started by Ms. ShuQin Zhang in 1996. Ms. Zhang worked as a Class One supervisor within the Chinese prison system and a journalist on prison related issues. She had many deep conversations with prisoners and the children of these prisoners; through research, she learned that many young children were abandoned, became vagrants, or starved to death. As a mother herself, it was heartbreaking for Ms. Zhang to see young children being neglected and being forced to commit crimes to survive in the community.
Children who live in the Sun Villages not only receive normal education, but also learn independence and cooperation. Over a period of 14 years, the Sun Village is now located in six provinces (Beijing, Qinghai, Jiangxi, Shanxi, and Henan) in China, providing shelters for over 2,000 unattended children.
